I know that DIY projects are not as fun when there are not before and after pictures, but for some reason I didn’t think to take before pictures. However, I thought some of you may want to see what we did in our guest bedroom, plus I need some friendly advice!
Let me begin by saying that we bought a bachelor pad condo from a friend. DH and I moved in and all the walls were painted the same color green. It’s nice and it’s kind of a brushed suede look, however, in every SINGLE room is a bit much….as I’m sure you can imagine.
The first step was to paint our guest bedroom. We chose to paint it a nice gray color and to change the trim from a beige shade to black. Different idea, I know, but my DH was really attached to the idea so I went with it. The good thing with paint is, if you mess up, you can always paint over it, right? Luckily, that is right because we got what we thought was a gray, painted the walls and then realized it looked more blue than gray. So, we packed back into the car, went back to Lowe’s, got more paint, and started over. Here’s the room painted below and my DH being a ham on our bunk beds we got from his family. His mom repainted them black for us and we found the coverlets at Kohl’s.
Next, I found a bookshelf on Craigslist listed at $75 and talked them down to $50 and you guessed it…painted it black.
I know this is not the best picture and we have since relocated the lamp to our new desk which I also found on Craigslist and touched up the black paint. You can see the desk below. The cool picture frame on the desk pulls out the cream stitching in the coverlet and was found on clearance at Pier 1 for about $5. The little desk organizer was a good purchase, because before that I was just using old Samford University cups to hold all our pens, pencils, paper clips, scissors…you get the idea.
Next, my sister-in-law (who helped me reorganize and de-clutter my life last time she was here), found this great picture to tie in the oranges, blacks, and just to give a little pop of something extra to the room.
So, I’ve gotten a good start on this room….but, my question for you is have you seen any great decorative pillows to pull it all together on the bunk beds? I can find this fiery orange color but only with brown. Do you have any suggestions? Also should I put something on the wall above the bunk beds or leave it alone because we already have the huge painting on the side wall?
I’ve been to Pottery Barn, Pier 1, Kohl’s, Target, Ross and I am so sick of looking. Please let me know any more suggestions you may have. This domestically challenged newlywed always welcomes your input!!!

I agree with Jessica on Etsy… even if you can't find it, I'm sure someone can make it work for you!
Everything looks great!! What about going to a fabric store and getting fabric and the pillows you can buy with nothing on them in the craft section at wal-mart? Then you could make the pillows you are looking for.
Thanks so much everyone! Yes, I have been to all the places listed. I really am thinking my best bet is to find fabric on Etsy & hire a friend to do it for me. This is just getting old. Thanks so much for the new followers as well.
We are always glad to have you!
The room looks great! Love the wonderful elements you've added. TJ Maxx & Marshalls ususally have loads of decor pillows in lots of differet colors and styles.Cheers!Tina

You know, I think I'd almost go with a different color throw pillow. Like blue…the same hue that is the sky in that painting. Just a thought…

You might try finding exactly the fabric you want on them and then googling a no-sew pillow design. Orange is a fantastic accent color this year. You might be seeing more as the stores get their inventory in.Win Rachael Ray bake ware at my blog. Thanks!Sherry
Wow! Everything looks great! I love all of your great deals! I've seen some cute black pillows with stitching at Thai Pan. Thanks for linking to Creative Cats!
Lovely makeover. I like your color choices. My two suggestions Ross & TJ Maxx have already been mentioned. If you can't find anything there Etsy always a good choice for something unique.
Hi there! I'll be back to visit later, but needed to ask you to please add a link back to my party so I can keep it on my list. Thanks!
Have you checked cb2.com? Sometimtes they have really good deals. Also have you thought about making pillow shams? There are some amazing no-sew tutorials! Good luck!
For the colors…I would try flip the chip on glidden.com's color palette. Once you flip the chip, you will see colors that go well with your chosen color for accents.
Try Target online. They have thousands of pillows, prints, and other decor items that never hit the shelves.
You can't go wrong with black. It's such a classic color. Almost anything looks better when painted black. It looks great!XOXOJen
Check Wal-Mart! Their Better Homes & Gardens line is really good looking stuff. I just bought some pillows there last week and I would have never thought much of Wal-mart's home dept before now. Plus, they were a great price…$10.88 a piece!
